But ‘sustainable development’ is not an easy concept to understand and implement, and that’s where renowned academic institutions like TERI University come in. TERI University becomes one of the first institutions in India to announce courses relevant for inculcating understanding of sustainable development, with the launch of their programme, Master’s in Sustainable Development Practice (MA-SDP).

We, at ThinktoSustain.com, present an Interview with Dr. Arabinda Mishra, Dean, Faculty of Policy & Planning, TERI University, New Delhi. Dr. Mishra is Ph.D. from Sambalpur University, Orissa (“Environmental & Resource Economics, Impact Assessment”). He is currently working as Dean (Faculty of Policy & Planning, TERI University) and Director (Climate Change, TERI). About TERI University

Question: Sir, do provide some background information about TERI University.

Answer: The genesis of TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a not-for-profit independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.

The University was established and constituted on 19th August 1998 and was granted ‘Deemed-to-be University’ status by the University Grants Commission and notified vide Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India (notification no.F-9/19/95-U-3 dated 5th October 1999).

The relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. This relationship is enshrined in a memorandum of understanding between the University and TERI (Tata Energy Research Institute, later renamed The Energy & Resources Institute), wherein the two have agreed on collaborative research and programmes, joint studies, and mutual support for seminars, symposia, and conferences. TERI has also provided an initial corpus to financially support the University’s establishment. Additionally, TERI’s existing infrastructure – state-of-the-art laboratories, well-equipped field stations, and highly professional manpower – is available for TERI University to tap into and gain from.

The Board of Management is the principal executive body of the University. All academic matters are the responsibility of the academic council, the principal academic body of the school. In addition to these, other committees have been constituted to aid the University’s administration, until 2009, an Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of a nominee of the University Grants Commission will advise the University on matters related to its academic planning and growth.

TERI University’s Board of Management is responsible for its overall administration and control. The Academic Council, chaired by the Vice Chancellor, decides the academic policy of the University, approves the curriculum, courses, and examination results and appoints committees to look into specific academic matters arising from time to time. The Finance Committee renders financial advice.
